Sports betting started in October 2001 and allows Koreans to bet on soccer and basketball games and has since expanded to a broader menu of sports under the National Sports Promotion Act.

All legal sports betting is channelled through Sports Toto, a government-sanctioned monopoly operated by the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation (KSPO) via its trustee Sports Toto Korea Co., Ltd., using parimutuel/lottery-style products such as Toto and Proto.
